Mashebia Johnson, 17, a senior at Pine Tree High School, was killed in a tragic automobile accident Friday, Sept. 22, at around 8:30 p.m.

Johnson was riding in a car with her fiancé and his sister when the accident occurred. Johnson and the sister were both killed due to injuries suffered in the accident. The driver sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital. The driver of the other vehicle was ejected and suffered life threatening injuries in the accident.

Johnson was involved in different things over her high school career, including softball and photojournalism. She was described by friends as being very likable, and someone who was a good friend to a lot of people.

Johnson leaves behind family members including a daughter who is around one year old. Friends have banded together to do things to benefit the family, including an account where people can donate to help with funeral expenses. They are also selling t-shirts in her memory, for $15, and those shirts will be ordered after sales are complete on Oct. 14. The money from those shirts will go to benefit the family.

Friends are grieving the loss of Johnson. They showed up Saturday night in a local park for a candlelight vigil in her memory, and counselors were on campus Monday to speak with individuals who needed to talk about what had happened to their friend.

A balloon release has been scheduled for Friday morning at 7:45 a.m. in the parking lot in front of the cafeteria in memory of Johnson, and other activities and memorials may be forthcoming in the next few weeks and months.

“This young lady always had a sunny smile and a friendly disposition,” Greg Collins, her photography teacher said. “She was a delight to have in class, and was well liked by her peers. She will be missed.”

Johnson’s family has said they will make sure her daughter knows what a great person she was, and they will raise the girl like Johnson would have wanted.

And, Johnson’s friends say they will never forget her, especially when important events this year – what would have been her senior year – take place.

“She will be there with us,”  they said.
